Slot jackpot winner was feeling lucky

Tampa Bay Online, Thursday, November 27, 2008 at 1:24:33 PM

The winner of the largest slot machine jackpot in Florida history said she played the machine because she "felt lucky" and plans to use some of her $2.5 million winnings to pay off her home in Land O' Lakes.

Terese Moore said she visited the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on Tuesday night for a car drawing. She had already won $200 before she hit the Wheel of Fortune Mega Jackpot worth $2,551,037.

The jackpot is linked to slot machines in a progressive, Native American network of 300 casinos across the country. Every time a coin is played in a linked machine in the network, the jackpot accumulates.

Seminole casino in Tampa debuts blackjack

WFLX-TV, Thursday, November 13, 2008 at 8:16:11 PM

Gamblers at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tampa can now play blackjack, baccarat and other card games.

The casino opened 104 tables at 5 a.m. Thursday, despite questions over whether such games are even legal in the state of Florida. The Indian tribe's casino in Hollywood also is running the card games.

The state Supreme Court ruled in July that Gov. Charlie Crist did not have the authority to agree to the pact that led the table games and Las Vegas-style slot machines becoming legal.

Traveling museum exhibit coming to Hard Rock CasinoTampa

Press Release, Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at 4:51:29 PM

The Seminole Tribe of Florida Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum is opening one of its traveling exhibits "JACKPOT! Seminole Gaming From Then Until Now" July 25th in the Seminole Hard Rock Tampa South Garage/casino entrance walkway. The exhibit will be on display through September 2008 and features a complete historical perspective on tribal sovereignty and Seminole gaming and also a video with interviews from senior members of the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The Jackpot! exhibition is free and open to the public 24 hours a day. "This exhibit offers an incredible interactive experience for the Tampa Bay community to get up close to Seminole Tribal history," said Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino President John Fontana. Members of the press are invited to attend the VIP unveiling of the exhibit on Friday, July 25th. The VIP unveiling includes food and drinks at Plum Lounge at 6pm and a guided tour of the exhibit at 7pm. Please call Gina Morales to RSVP at 813.627.7771. About Jackpot! The exhibit first debuted at the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum at Okalee in October 2007 and focuses on the concepts of tribal sovereignty and the institution of gaming as an economic force in today's American Indian tribes. Visitors will learn about legislation that has affected tribal sovereignty in the United States, and the landmark Supreme Court decisions that still protect tribal interests today. The exhibit also highlights how gaming revenues are used by the Tribe to fund government operations, healthcare, housing, cultural institutions, education, child and elder care, police and fire departments, infrastructure, and donations to charitable organizations. Michole Eldred, Curator of Collections for Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum commented, "The Tampa Seminole Hard Rock facility has been a strategic partner and proudly welcomes the exhibit as well as other potential engagements with the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum in the future. They are very interested in sharing the culture of the Seminole Tribe of Florida with the vast number of visitors who represent local, national and international communities."

Two Tampa Bay area men hit the largest bad beat poker jackpot in the nation

Press Release, Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at 3:38:25 PM

Tampa, Florida--The Texas Hold 'Em Bad Beat Poker Jackpot of $564,912 won Monday, June 9th at 9:55 p.m. is certainly the largest to be offered in Florida and the all-time record for live poker Texas Hold 'Em games at a single property in the nation. The unheard of jackpot win brought the 24-7 live action in Seminole Hard Rock's Poker Room to a complete stop.

"There was absolutely a huge response in the room when this happened, people from all the other tables came over to see and congratulate the winners," said Henry Funke, Poker Room Manager.

Both "big" winners were local players; Glen Upchurch of Clearwater was the "loser" with four sixes and won $282,453, William Lewicke of Winter Haven was the "winner" with a straight flush to the eight of spades and won $141,227. The other eight players at the table each won $17,654.

The Bad Beat Jackpot had been building since April 28, 2008 when a payout of $285,923 was hit. The massive prize is the largest ever won at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Tampa, which has been in Tampa Bay five years and previously operated as Seminole Casino since 1982.

Just as good--the new jackpot is already at $185,621.

While playing cards are believed to have originated in China, the present-day 52-card deck of four suits—spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs—with 13 cards per suit comes from 15th century France.
